There are several important factors to consider when optimizing your site.
What is Search Engine Optimisation?
Search engine optimization (SEO) is how you present the data from your site for search engines (mainly Google) when they send a robot in to crawl your content. Your SEO structure predetermines how your content is presented to Google in a format that they like to receive it in. There are several factors to be considered during this process, all of which are important to the outcome and will affect your ranking, which in turn will affect how and where you appear over and above other sites with similar content (ie your competitors).
What is a Google Ranking?
The higher your ranking on Google and the more pages you have indexed, the more traffic you will get from browsers not performing direct lookups on your site (already know of your business and it’s web address) but people searching for keywords relating to your products and/or services and then discovering your site as a search result outcome. Ideally, your website will appear in search results on page 1.
Are any browsers worth having?
Ensure your goal is to bring in quality browsers (browsers that actually are looking for your services/products) by ensuring that your content is specific and targeted. The last thing you want is people visiting your site only to realize they it’s not what they were looking for and click straight back out again, this will give you traffic, but low time spent on site and low page impressions vs unique browser ratio.
Why do I need a Sitemap?
Make sure you have a sitemap in place for Google and it is submitted through the Webmaster tools. Even though Google will no doubt find your site anyway, the sitemap will provide you with important information that you may otherwise not know, such as what pages are being indexed and any problems with indexing or links.
Is my URL important if I have optimization in place?
A top factor for SEO is ensuring the keyword for your product/service is in your URL name so bear this in mind when choosing your URL. It would be better for an electrician to have “www.allworkselectrical.com” instead of “www.allworks.com”.
Loading high res images.
It’s best not to exceed 100K page size (it is ok to exceed this but as a rule try to keep page size down). Try to keep image sizes low and save any high res images if necessary for the gallery.
Keeping your websites content fresh
It’s important to keep your websites content updated, there are a number of ways to do this, blogging, new images, new or additions to products and/or services, events, faq’s.
